Noel Dyrenforth’s Batiks | £800 Each
Noel’s work with Batik spans more than five decades. He discovered Batik in the 1960’s, when postwar Britain went through a culturally booming period. Noel was in his mid 20’s, had studied art and was looking for a medium in which he could be challenged in his artistic expression.
Although he started out by creating batik designs for women’s fashion, which were highly popular in the 60’s, he increasingly developed batik as a fine art and his work became known internationally.
Noel said that the pleasure of travel and cultural exchange had been a great stimulus in his work. The opportunity to exhibit and teach in many countries, particularly in Japan, Indonesia and China, had enabled him to connect by means of a common interest in batik. Although he owed a great debt to the traditional craft of batik, his work was conceptually different and diverse. He constantly explored the technique for his own intuitive and creative ends and loved the risks he could take in terms of breaking and redefining rules.
Because his work is of an abstract nature, the viewer can interpret the narratives in Noel’s batiks in a multitude of ways and layers.
The 3 batiks shown on the website are for sale with proceeds going to photograph and document Noel’s complete work, creating a database for online research for students of the technique.
