International Year of Batik Newsletter – March 2024

Explore Batik Art

The Year of Batik project is getting underway properly now. The new Batik International website- www.batikinternational.com – is very active, growing in size steadily and posts new shows and workshops as they happen.  To be honest, we all went into this ambitious project with an idea, a purpose, a wing and a prayer. We really had no idea what we were starting or where it would go.  We are all batik artists and have a clear itinerary but had no money for the project nor any serious game plan or much experience in such a large and ambitious project. So, the project has evolved daily through numerous International Zoom meetings and a lot of discussion. We have had support of all kinds- financial and practical- as the year has passed and we are hopefully getting more efficient and more directed in all our activities. Getting this monthly newsletter out to an increasingly wider audience has been a big project in itself and one that is developing and evolving every month. Thanks, as always to Paula for her financial wizardry as our treasurer, to Rosi for her Batik expertise and diligence, to Stacey for coming on board and taking on some of the work that we couldn’t manage to do, to Beth for working social media for us and to Katy who built and continues to maintain the website. The sponsors and contributors know who they are, and we are eternally grateful for their help. We are still meeting new batik artists from all over the world who are being brought together by the Year of Batik. And we are still open to all suggestions, ideas, involvements and opinions, to sponsorship and financial support to keep this show on the road. Thank you all very much!

THE INTERNATIONAL BATIK ART COMPETITION

We are proud and pleased to announce an International Batik Competition in the year 2024 to 2025.

We invite all Batik artists to submit one high resolution jpeg of their Batik art (above 1 MB please) plus one detail jpeg in the following categories:

  • Representational/Figurative Batik
*Only those on fabric using dyes will be accepted
  • Abstract Art Batik
  • Traditional Batik
  • Mixed Media Batik
  • Apparel and Home Decor Batik
  • Natural Dye Batik

Each piece of art should be titled with dimensions and the materials used.

The entries will be judged by an international team of Batik experts.

Prizes will be awarded and the Winners’ Art will be exhibited on-line.

All inquiries can be sent to info@batikinternational.com.

We have received some valuable and high-profile publicity for the Year of Batik by being interviewed and videoed twice by Ricky Tims for “The Quilt Show“ TV channel in this past month. The audience for these interviews is enormous and we have had an instant response from Quilters from all over the world. The second interview, which also featured a batik demonstration, will be aired sometime in this early summer and reaches an audience of 100,000 subscribers.

SELVEDGE Issue 117 Irresistible [Link herePassword IRRESISTIBLE117]

In March, the UK Textile magazine “SELVEDGE” has put out a special “Irresistible” issue of the magazine in line with the Year of Batik with an issue dedicated to Resist Dyeing and Batik. It features an article by Rudolf Smend, the traditional Indonesian Batik world expert and owner of Galerie Smend in Koln, Germany.

There is an article on Indigo Dyeing by Liz Hoggard and another by the Indonesian batik artists Nia Fliam and Agus Ismoyo. There is also included an article on African wax prints from Gold Coast and batik in Guizhou Province in China.  Finally, an article on Nazek Hamdi (1926-2019) an Egyptian artist who is celebrated for pioneering the art of batik in the Arab region. All in all, it is a very comprehensive range of Batik articles.

Jonathan Evans has two articles on Batik on the Selvedge website in March, also.

BATIK GUILD EXHIBITIONS

This year, there are two high profile Batik Guild shows celebrating the International Year of Batik 2024-2025: “Patterns of Change” opening on Saturday May 4th at Botanical Gardens, Naples Florida and another at the Floor Obe Gallery, Rugby Art Museum and Gallery – in Rugby, England UK, opening on July 16th. The very first all-American Batik show- “Batik USA”- will open at the Estelle Creative Art Center in La Veta, Colorado on August 31st, 2024.

More shows are planned during the coming year in Italy, Poland and Sri Lanka and more are expected.

We continue to invite all Batik Artists to get involved, to send us information about exhibitions and workshops for us to post on the Year of Batik website. We really want this to be an ongoing noticeboard for all things Batik, but we need your participation for this to work. Please send any Batik news to:

info@batikinternational.com

And we are still actively looking for contributions, donations and sponsorship to enable us to keep this show on the road. Please help us promote, publicize and legitimize the Noble Art of Batik!
